Sandwich for three by Mr. Módos

4th October 2013

As part of the leader course we had the opportunity to see the historic town of Sandwich. Pete, our guide was flooding us with interesting information and stories about the town. Originally, Sandwich was a harbour town, one of the so-called cinque ports, but as the channel that separated the Isle of Thanet from Great Britain was filled up, today only a small port reminds us of the busy medieval harbour once ravaged and looted by French mercenaries as well, as a grim episode of the Franco-English wars. We had a stroll around town and saw the Dutch house, medieval gaol and the Ghosts' alley. On visiting the Town Hall we could see the place of past trials, used for wedding ceremonies these days. We had a coffee in the No Name Shop Bistro, it is really a charming café with a lot of delicacies. It was a wonderful morning in Sandwich despite the chilly weather.
