Quex Park and Cultural Quiz by Adriana Sallai

The whole group left for Quex Park at two o'clock to visit the Powell- Cotton Museum. The exhibition contained the extraoedinary collection of treasures which reflect Major Powell-Cottons longlife adventures. We saw many stuffed animals and skulls of different animals all overt the wall. It was fascinating and in my opinnion maybe a bit terrifying, and creepy. It's amazing to to see collections like this which reflect a lifestyle of a tribe from decades ago.

There were shorts films we coukd watch as well as weapons which had been used by tribesmen and Major Powell-Cotton.

Quex Park has an absolutely beautiful garden with fountains, statues and a botanic garden. Most of us ate raspberries and grapes from the garden. They had greenhouses with a few exotic flower as well.

In the evening we had a cultural quiz in the Kent School building located on the High Street. Another Italian group had the same activity with us there. What we had to do is walk around and answer 50 questions about British way to life. To every question there was a card with different solutions to pick from. Basically what each group did was get answers from other groups. A group of Italian boys brought all the cards to us, so we answered them together and had a great laugh. The 3 winning groups in the end were us, Hungarians. :D

London the beautiful capital of England 4/1

I was excited that morning. I slept over a little, so I had to be fast. I got ready and had my breakfast then I left to the train station. The weather was lovely so a thin jacket and a t-shirt was enough. The meeting point was in front of the train station, where the buses stop. Our guide was Steve Sass so when we met him there, we got on bus and started our journey to London. The way to there was so long and I was so tired so I woke up when we arrived to Greenwich, the German grouop which came with us got off the bus and we were taken to the Embankment in London. It was my second time there but it was still too big and amazing. Steve, as our guide led us to all of the famous sights, like the Houses of Parliament with the Big Ben, the Westminster Abbey and the Baker street. All of us enjoyed Steve's guidance as he was very funny and an amazing man, I reckon. After seeing almost all of the popular sights we went to the British Museum and spent there an hour. I think 5 hours would not be enough as it is very big and interesting. We had some tasks to solve in there. After the museum visit we had a little freetime to spend in this enormous city. With a little part of the group we visited the famous Oxford street. We saw lots of shops, restaurants and interesting places, but we had just an hour so we couldn't really dig into anything. The meeting point was at the Traffalgar square. We joined there our other classmates and went back to the Embankment where our bus waited for us to get on. The whole team was tired, so the way back was quiet because almost all of us were sleeping.

Bowling by Laura Lokody

On Wednesday evening at 7:30 we went to play bowling to Margate by bus. It was really modern and comfortable. Unfortunately, there was a championship and we couldn't play but it wasn't a problem for us because there were lots of opportunities to do something interesting and it was also good. Then at 9 o'clock we started to play bowling. We did 4 groups and each team had 5 or 6 members. Dóri was the first, the winner in my group. Feri was so sad because he came last but everybody was deft and enjoyed the game. We played only one round and I hope we will go again.

Visiting Canterbury by Dorina Nagynemes

The first Wednesday afternoon we went to Canterbury with Philip, who is a teacher at KSE. He showed us the Normann keep, the city's wall and there were some very old houses made of wood. After we saw the sights we had a very short time to buy something or look around in the city. In this break we went to a very cool sweet shop. There were a lot of candies and chocolate. After the break the group went to the Cathedral and we had a guided-tour. The guide told us a lot of things about the Cathedral. The Cathedral is a very famous and a very old building. Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170 in front of the altar and his dead body stayed here until Henry VIII destroyed it. The wave of the curch was bulit in gothic style. I liked the Cathedral guided-tour because we learnt from the guide some new information.

Let's go to Dover

On the first week's Sunday we visited Dover, which is famous for its geographical and historic places. There were a lot of operations during World War II. But mostly they commanded the navy from there. There is a secret wartime tunnel sstem under the Dover castle. The castle is a very old building but not the oldest because next to that there is a Roman lighthouse. There is a very old church too, from the early Saxon period. It's a nice place to visit. There's a splendid view of the Channel from the top of the keep.

West African Drumming Workshop

On Thursday night we had a West African Drumming Workshop. Everyone thought that it would be boring and some random guy would play in the middle of the room. After a few minutes it turned out, that we were all going to get a Jembe and we all (50 people together) have to play. As the next step, he showed us some rythms. When to stop or start, how to stop and 2 basic rythms. I think it went pretty well, considering that it was the frist time for everybody to do anything like this. As we progressed, we did more and more complicated things. For example one part of the group did the first rythm and the other part did the second one. Sometimes we just made random stuff.

I think, that I can say on everybody's behalf that it was awesome, although our hands got really hurt.

Drama Workshop

I guess, drama was the best activity so far. We had to create groups and work as a team. The task was to create a funny story and then perform that. We were supposed to use our chosen tools, which was actually a camera, and two ridiculous hats. I am not going to write the story we figured out, because it would be long, but I think we did it well. The other group`s performance was really amazing, too. Seriously I was surprised how funny and creative they were. I think everybody could use his or her personality and sense of humor in the play. We had a special comedy eve.

The first day in Broadstairs by Tímea Horváth

When I woke up I went downstairs to have breakfast. I thought I am in heaven, because there was nutella, the real one. I t was delicious. When I finished my breakfast Mrs. Morelli was kind brought to show the way to school. The morning lesson was really interesting. Philip, a native speaker taught us. It was good to hear his pronunciation. We write a short test and after that we learnt a little. In the afternoon we had an activity. We had to walk around in Broadstairs and answer some questions about the city. It was really useful. We got to know more about buildings, transport and the people who live here. In the evening a real actor came to us. The exercise was that in groups we had to act out a situation. The students and the teachers were so skillful, because everybody had fun and nobody felt it is awkward. Maybe around 10 o`clock I arrived home and went to sleep. It was a really good day.

Visiting Cambridge by Orsolya Kovács

After that we checked out at the airport we got on the bus and we started our journey to Cambridge. Cambridge is famous for its colleges. It is a beautiful city and also very crowded because of tourists. I really enjoyed the sightseeing. We visited Clare College, King`s College, St. John`s and Trinity College. The last one is famous for the fact that Newton learnt there. Moreover, we went on a punting tour, it was fantastic. If anything is stereotypically Cambridge, this must be it. Punting involves moving yourself in a long wooden boat by pushing a pole against the river bottom. Furthermore, we visited King`s College`s chapel, it was amazing and as huge as you can imagine.

The flight to London by Réka Szabó

The airplane journey was funny, but for me a little bit scary. It was my first time to travel by air. We needed to meet at B2 terminal between 4:15am and 4:30am. When everybody arrived, we put our luggage on a scale, after that we got a sticker, which showed our luggage will be on the plane, and they put one on the luggage, too, which showed them which plane they need to put them on. Then we got through all the check places, they checked our clothes, which plane we need to go, who we are. Then we arrived to the plane, everybody sat down, and soon the journey started. When we look off I was surprised, but it was not bad, it was funny. The journey was quiet and peaceful. I slept for a short time. The air hostesses were going around and offered drinks and food. The landing was quite frightening for me. When we got off from the plane, and went for our luggage, they checked us again. Then we were in the UK.

Karolyi is back in Broadstairs! - ERASMUS+ programme 2014

Our school was fortunate enough to win funds for yet another work experience program in the UK. In the framework of the European Union`s ERASMUS+ programme 20 students have the opportunity to take part in a mobility programme that means a 4-week stay in the picturesque city of Broadstairs. Our students are placed at different small and medium sized enterprises to get a first hand experience of the world of work. For most of them, this is their first job. This is an outstanding opportunity to gain work experience in an English-speaking environment. Besides improving their language and inter-cultural skills they map the companies and try to get to know how enterprises operate in the UK, which is one of the economically most developed members of the EU. 

As the students who participated in last year`s programme popularised this great opportunity quite effectively through their presentations, sharing pictures, videos and using this blog, there were a lot of applicants to the programme. All applicants went through a complex selection process where their language skills, academic performance and motivation were assessed. In order to secure equal chances for all students in our school we proportionately selected students from all class types (bilingual, language preparatory and normal) and students who are disadvantaged (socially or financially) received extra points. Applicants were tested anonymously to secure objectivity. Finally, after months of preparation the 20 students are here in Broadstairs and they will probably gain some of the most memorable and useful experiences of their lives.
